Vor einigen Tagen hat der ESPN-Leib- und Magen-Kolumnist Bill Simmons anläßlich der MVP-Diskussion sein Ranking von von 425 NBA-Spielern gegeben (not really). Nummer zwei ist Allen Iverson, Nummer eins und damit sein MVP, nicht zu Unrecht, Shaq:

Try to follow this equation:
A. The Lakers won 57 games last year … they’re headed for 35 wins this year.
B. The Heat won 42 games last year … they’re headed for 62 wins this year.

I’m no John Hollinger, but even I can add that up: That’s a 42-game swing, not to mention the balance of power shifting to the East. And yes, that should have been enough to win Shaq another MVP […] When I think of the 2004-2005 season, I’m going to think of Shaq first … and that’s the very definition of an MVP. At least to me.

Interessant ist die Nummer drei seines Rankings, der “Diggler” Dirk Nowitzki, für den er, überraschend für mich, einige warme Worte findet.

One of the biggest surprises of the season: Dirk Nowitzki developing a nasty streak. Who knew? Has there ever been a tougher European player? Actually, let’s rephrase that – has there ever been a TOUGH European player? Where did this come from? Did Cuban hypnotize him into thinking he was playing every Mavs game for the German national team? Even when Ashton Kutcher “Punk’d” him last week, you could tell Dirk wanted to kick his butt for a few seconds. Just stunning. Forget about the scoring explosions, or the fact that he’s having a career year with shuffling coaches, eight new teammates and no point guards to help him out. Having a cocky, snarling 7-foot German guy with 25-foot range has to rank among the highlights of the season. Who’s more fun to root against than Dirk Nowitzki?

(In fact, I’ll go this far: Last summer, I wrote that Dallas was crazy for not trying to trade Nowitzki for Shaq, since it would have guaranteed them 2-3 titles and all. Now? I still think they’re crazy … only not nearly as crazy. If that makes sense.)

War was? Ach ja, gestern:
Philadelphia – Cleveland 103:98, LeBron james mit 37 Punkten, Iverson mit verletzten Daumen und “nur” 23Punkten. Aber 16 Assists. Philly konnte damit das nun achtplatzierten Cleveland überholen und die Nets sind bis auf anderthalb Siege dran.
Orlando – Detroit 102:104, schlimmer als die Niederlage dürfte für die Magic der verlust von Grant Hill wiegen, der wg. Verletzung bis Saisonende fehlen wird. Mit dreieinhalb Siegen Rückstand auf die Playoffs, sind die Chancen nur noch rechnersicher Natur.
Toronto – Atlanta 109:101OT
Memphis – Miami 97:81, Shaq weiterhin wg. Magenproblemen draußen. Dank Niederlage der T-Wolves machen die achtplatzierten Grizzlies einen großen Schritt gen Playoff
Indiana – Washington 93:83
NY Knicks – Chicago 94:102
New Orleans – Utah 87:98
Milwaukee – Charlotte 93:75
Minnesota – Denver 104:107 Und Denver raucht weiter im Ranking nach vorne, 6ter Sieg in Folge, 9-1 die Bilanz und nur noch ein halber Sieg von Houston (Platz 6) entfernt. Minnesota verliert nicht nur, durch den Sieg von Memphis ist der Abstand auf die Playoffs nun 3,5 Siege angewachsen.
Portland – Sacramento 115:119
Seattle – LA Lakers 94:117, Kobe mit 42Pkt, Für Seattle ist es eh egal, da man als Sieger der Division eh auf Platz drei zementiert ist.
Golden State – Phoenix 127:119
